WHAT DOES GOD NEED?

Most of us mainly see God as a “need-meeting” God.  If you research the many compound names of God such as El Shadia, El Elyon, Jehovah Shammah, etc., it will become apparent that God is self-sufficient and seems to need nothing.  Yet is this totally true?

  •  God doesn’t need anything:

Acts 17:25 reads, “Nor is He worshipped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything…”  This scripture reveals to us that God is complete in Himself and does not need anything.

  • God decided to need you:

The truth is, God doesn’t need for you to exist, He needs for you to co-exist.  He wants to partner with you so things are accomplished on earth that are His will.  Many people are so wrapped up in God being sovereign that they go into passivity.  Many scriptures confirm that God works when we work, He moves when we move, and He acts when we act.  We see this played out in the beginning of creation in Genesis 2:19, “Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them.  And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name.”   This is an example of God choosing to need a man for His work on the earth.

God lives within the decisions and principles He creates.  God has made the decision and works within the principle that He will work with people of relationship.  God gave Adam authority over all the animals.  Because of this, it became his responsibility to name them.   We see this with parents who buy a dog or cat.  Because they now own the pet, it becomes their responsibility.  Part of their responsibility is to name it as they see fit.

This principle is also seen in the realm of faith.  In Mark 6, Jesus is in His hometown and desires to minister healing and miracles among the people.  Yet it says, “Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.  And He marveled at their unbelief…”   We know that God has all power and can do all things.  The same thing is true of the Son.  But God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit have limited their activity on the earth according to our faith.

This principle tells us that we need to decide to do our part and then God will do His part.

  • Have you decided to need God?

This is an important decision because God is not going to do your part and your part is not supernatural.  When you do your part in obedience to God, He will take your natural effort and combine it with His supernatural power and bring good results.  But take note, your part comes first, not God’s.   God needs you to accomplish His will on the earth because He has decided to limit His actions on this earth to our actions and obedience.

Jesus has already paid the price for the redemption of every person on earth.  The problem is that God decided that and has made it so that only those who confess and believe in His Son, Jesus Christ, will be saved.  God partners with us when we partner with Him.
